Today, we’re thrilled to share a defining milestone
in SquareX’s journey: Zscaler, the leader in Zero
Trust has acquired SquareX. Joining Zscaler marks
the next chapter in our mission to transform how
enterprises secure the place where modern work truly
happens—the browser. As part of Zscaler, we will
bring our vision of secure, seamless, and fearless
browsing to thousands more enterprises worldwide.
We founded SquareX on a simple notion: the browser
has become the primary way employees get work
done—and a prime target for attackers. Even with
strong secure web gateways, there was still a gap as
to what was happening inside the browser. We saw an
opportunity to add real-time threat detection and
response directly into the browser, making SquareX’s
in-browser protection a powerful additional layer of
defense. Our Browser Detection and Response (BDR)
capabilities, delivered via an extension, embeds
browser detection and response to browser‑native
threats, like malicious extensions or malicious
scripts, giving security teams deep, actionable
visibility while remaining virtually invisible to
users.
We didn’t stop there. We also knew that today’s
workforce demands the flexibility to work and access
apps from any browser and device, including personal
ones, making VPNs or VDI, non-starters. Our
extension-based security was the perfect foundation
to solve this need, and our vision expanded to both
detecting browser-borne threats with BDR and also
enabling least-privilege application access from the
browser.
Since the browser is the primary way employees get
work done, we built SquareX to be easy for both
users and IT. By integrating seamlessly with any
leading browser, Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari,
we avoid disruptive browser change management. Users
keep their preferred browser, and IT does not have
to manage yet another standalone tool.
We’ve always believed security should be powerful
and unobtrusive, and Zscaler shares that philosophy.
Zscaler’s Zero Trust Browser and Zero Trust Exchange
make app access simple and secure, ensuring only the
right user, on the right device, on any browser,
reaches the right resource.
So what does the future hold for our technology? Our
technology will integrate into the Zscaler platform
and Zero Trust Browser to redefine browser security
and app access on managed and unmanaged devices. On
managed devices, our extension adds browser
detection/response and feeds deep threat telemetry
into Zscaler to stop browser-native threats. On BYOD
and unmanaged devices, we’ll complement Zero Trust
Browser app access with last-mile controls—making
any browser a secure, VDI alternative with work
profiles, browser DLP, device posture, and local
data protection. Together, this delivers an
unmatched balance of user experience, productivity,
and security.
Announcements like this always raise questions for
customers. For SquareX customers, our commitment to
you does not change; it strengthens. You can expect
continued innovation in our core capabilities, now
backed by Zscaler’s scale, resources, and global
footprint. Your existing deployments and investments
will be protected, and over time you’ll benefit from
tighter integration with Zscaler services, expanded
analytics, and more robust, risk-based controls
across managed and unmanaged devices—without asking
your users to change how they work or which browser
they use.
Looking ahead, we’re incredibly excited about what
this next chapter unlocks. The future of work is
browser-first and AI-powered, and the threat
landscape will only grow more sophisticated.
Together with Zscaler, we’re positioned to stay
ahead of that curve—to anticipate how attackers will
innovate and build defenses that keep them in check.
Our vision remains unchanged: to let enterprise
users be fearless online, confident that the
security protecting them is powerful, proactive, and
largely invisible.
We are deeply grateful to our team for their
ingenuity and dedication, to our customers and
partners for their trust and feedback, and to the
broader security community for helping us validate
and refine our approach. Becoming part of Zscaler is
the beginning of a new and exciting journey, and we
look forward to continuing to build the future of
security and access in the browser.
